Late Night Food FAQ
Straight answers about eating late: why places close early, how late night delivery works, and what to do when the posted hours are wrong. Each answer links to the sources behind it and shows when it was last reviewed.
Late night hours and 24 hour spots
- Why is fast food not open 24 hours anymore?
Many fast food chains cut overnight hours during the pandemic and never brought them back.
- How do 24 hour restaurants work?
A 24 hour restaurant runs in shifts, so there is always a crew on.
- Is McDonald's still open 24 hours?
Some McDonald's are still open 24 hours, but many aren't, and hours vary by location.
- Does any fast food serve breakfast 24 hours?
Yes, but not at McDonald's. Jack in the Box serves its full menu, breakfast included, all day, and diner chains like Denny's and IHOP serve breakfast late at night at locations that stay open 24 hours.
- Are there rewards programs for late night food?
None of the big programs we checked offers a perk just for ordering late, but the regular benefits still work after dark.
Drive-thru and dining rooms
- Why is the dining room closed when the drive-thru is open?
A drive-thru can run with a much smaller crew, and it keeps workers behind a window instead of in an open room.
Late night delivery
- Does DoorDash deliver late at night?
Yes, as long as a store near you is open and taking DoorDash orders.
- Does Uber Eats deliver after midnight?
Yes, as long as a restaurant near you is still open on the app.
- Why are food delivery fees so high?
Delivery apps stack several fees on top of your food, and the menu prices in the app are often higher than at the counter.
- Is DoorDash or Uber Eats cheaper?
Neither app is always cheaper. The same meal can cost less on DoorDash one night and less on Uber Eats the next, because each fee depends on the store, your address and the order.
- Why was my late night delivery order cancelled?
Most late night cancellations come from the restaurant side: the kitchen closed, ran out of something or stopped taking delivery orders.
- What happens if the restaurant is closed when the driver gets there?
The driver reports the closed store in the app, and your order gets cancelled.
Is it really open?
- Google said it was open, so why was it closed?
Google shows the hours it was last given, which may not match tonight.
- How does Google know a restaurant's hours?
Google pulls hours from several places at once: what the owner enters in their Business Profile, the restaurant's own website, data it licenses from other companies and facts that Maps users contribute.
- How late is too late to go to a restaurant before it closes?
A common rule of thumb is to arrive at least 30 minutes before the kitchen closes.
- Is it rude to go to a restaurant right before closing?
It isn't rude if the kitchen is still taking orders, since the restaurant chose its hours.
- Why do restaurants stop serving before their posted closing time?
The posted closing time is often when the doors lock, not when the kitchen stops cooking.
- What is the 30/30/30 rule for restaurants?
In the restaurant business, 30/30/30 is a budgeting rule of thumb for owners: roughly 30% of sales go to food costs, 30% to labor and 30% to overhead, leaving about 10% as profit.
Bars and last call
- When does a bar kitchen close compared to last call?
There's no set rule. Last call follows the alcohol laws where the bar is, but the kitchen keeps whatever hours the owner chooses, and it often stops cooking before the bar stops pouring.
- What states allow bars to stay open 24 hours?
Nevada is the best-known state where bars can legally serve around the clock, and New Orleans is the best-known city.
Holidays and night shifts
- Are fast food restaurants open on Thanksgiving and Christmas?
It depends on the chain and the store. A few chains close every location on Thanksgiving and Christmas, while others keep most stores open with hours that vary by location, so check the specific restaurant before you go.
- When should you eat after a night shift?
Eat a small meal before you sleep, not a big one. Federal workplace health researchers at NIOSH also suggest eating little or nothing between midnight and 6 AM, and keeping your meals close to a normal daytime pattern when you can.
