Is it rude to go to a restaurant right before closing?
It isn't rude if the kitchen is still taking orders, since the restaurant chose its hours. But a late table keeps the staff from closing up and going home, so how you act matters more than when you walk in.
A New York restaurant owner told The Takeout that "we are here to serve our guests during the business hours we list." He also said to read the room. If staff are already mopping and stacking chairs, head somewhere else, like a drive-thru.
The reason is the work that starts once the last guest leaves. A typical server closing list includes wiping down tables and booths, stacking chairs, sweeping, cleaning stations, reconciling the register and locking up. Your table sits in the middle of all that.
If you do go in late:
- Call ahead to ask if the kitchen is still cooking.
- Order everything at once. A restaurant consultant told Fox News the rudest habit is "one-timing" a server, sending them back for one thing at a time. Tell them you're in a hurry and put in the full order.
- Tip extra. The owner who spoke to The Takeout said an extra tip goes a long way when staff stay late for you.
- Get it to go. A to-go order lets the dining room close on time.
Is it rude to go an hour before closing?
Usually not, as long as the kitchen is open. Just plan for the meal's length. The same consultant put a casual dinner at an hour to an hour and 45 minutes, so you may still be eating when the doors lock. Order promptly and ask for the check early.
Late Night Food Spots gives each listing a leave-by time with a 30 minute buffer for sit-down places, so you arrive with time to spare.
