Why is fast food not open 24 hours anymore?
Many fast food chains cut overnight hours during the pandemic and never brought them back. Night shifts cost more to staff than they used to, and fewer people are out eating at 3 AM, so a lot of stores now close at midnight or 1 AM instead.
Yelp data reported by CNN shows the number of US restaurants offering 24 hour service fell 18% from 2020 to 2024. The same report blames earlier dinner times, less late night drinking, and higher labor and food costs.
Labor is still the biggest problem. A Technomic analyst told Fox News in May 2026 that labor is "still really the No. 1 issue" for restaurants, and that late night demand "just isn't there the way it was pre-pandemic." Graveyard shifts were hard to fill even before 2020, and higher wages make a slow night harder to pay for.
Some cities have pushed closing times earlier too. Philadelphia passed a 2024 bill requiring businesses in its Kensington neighborhood to close by 11 PM.
What happened to 24 hour fast food
It didn't disappear, but it got patchy. Wendy's has said about 90% of its US restaurants stay open until midnight or later, which is late but not all night. Hours vary by location, so two stores from the same chain a few miles apart can close hours apart.
Diner chains held on better. As of April 2024, CNN reported that about 75% of Denny's restaurants were open 24 hours again, and all of Waffle House's nearly 2,000 were.
Each listing on Late Night Food Spots shows when that location's kitchen stops cooking, not just when the doors lock.
