Drive-thru and dining rooms

Why is the dining room closed when the drive-thru is open?

A drive-thru can run with a much smaller crew, and it keeps workers behind a window instead of in an open room. Late at night, many fast food stores close the lobby to cut staffing and lower safety risks, while the drive-thru keeps taking orders.

Staffing is the biggest reason. Worker accounts gathered by Mashed in 2025 say many McDonald's run overnight with three or four people, against 10 to 15 during the day. Once the lobby closes, often around midnight, that small crew can serve cars and clean the dining room at the same time.

Safety is the other big one. In 2024, a franchise owner closed the dining rooms at all four of its Oakland Taco Bells after repeated robberies, but kept the drive-thru windows open. The same Mashed report says some stores don't let crew members go outside after the lobby closes.

The drive-thru also carries a big part of the business. Circana data reported by The Hustle shows about 43% of US fast food orders are placed at drive-thrus, so a chain can close the lobby and still serve much of its demand.

Local rules can decide it too. A McDonald's in West Hollywood kept its drive-thru open all night while its lobby closed at 2 AM, because the owner needed a new city permit for extended hours. The city approved an all night lobby in March 2026, and the owner said it would ease drive-thru lines.

Lobby and drive-thru hours vary by location, even within one chain. Late Night Food Spots listings note when a lobby closes but the drive-thru keeps serving.
